Because we care about our customers, we’ll explain common problems you may experience with your roof before we discuss how we’re equipped to do roof repairs for you.

Common Roofing Problems

The list of specific roof issues that can occur is almost too many to name. We don’t want to overwhelm you, so we’ve listed regular roofing problems you’re more likely to see. If you believe another roof-related issue has taken place, please contact the best roof repair specialists in St. Louis and surrounding areas–Martin & Sons LLC.

Clogged Gutters

Gutters funnel rainfall from essential home structures. Your gutters clog when the rainwater it catches does not funnel out properly. When the rainwater pools in an area, instead of draining, it will cause cracks and erosion to settle into the structure. Your walls become an easy target for mold. Then, the structure of your home may rot. Even your yard, under extreme conditions, can experience erosion and plate shifting if rainwater is allowed to gather for an extended time.

Leaky Roof

If your roof is leaking, the chances are high that other roof-related issues are occurring. For example, a leaky roof is usually caused by broken shingles, missing shingles, cracked flashing, or clogged gutters. Leaky roofs expose your home to early decay and risk ruining your household possessions.

Damaged Shingles

There are over 20 types of shingle material. Some materials are less weatherproof than others. Some material, such as asphalt, is prone to blistering, curling, granule loss, and thermal splitting. Any of the aforementioned defects give an unsightly appearance to your roof, like making the shingles separate and lift or develop bubbles. Aside from an unattractive appearance, any defect can lead to extensive repair work if left untreated.

Bad Installation

Not all roofing contractors are made equal. Some roof contractors do a bad job installing roofs. You may suspect there’s a roof installation problem if you notice any of the following: water stains on your ceiling; rooflines that are uneven; mismatched shingles; damaged shingles; flashing that does not appear new; or general lack of uniformity.

Shingle Shrinkage

Shingles may shrink over time. This causes the shingles to separate, opening holes and cracks. When that happens, debris, water, and snow may collect between the shingles and inside your roof. If not tended to, shrunken shingles can cause excessive, costly water damage to your home.

Damaged Flashing

Flashing is the smooth part of your roof that outlines it if you will. It steers water away from your chimney, ventilation pipes, skylights, and similar structures. Poorly installed flashing or shoddy material can lead to warped flashing. If your flashing is warped, the aftermath can put your home in a state of disrepair. Your chimney or roof can flood. Your ventilation pipes may rupture. Cracks and tears may form throughout your home, as well.

Inadequate Roof Repairs

It’s a terrible feeling to know that you needed a few roof problems fixed, and the repairperson only worsened them. Inadequate roof repairs not only aggravate a serious home repair issue but they also increase the likelihood of further damage. You can reduce the probability of experiencing inadequate roof work by checking the repairperson’s license, asking for pictures of past work, and searching their reviews online.

Improper Maintenance

Improper maintenance is a common roof problem. As a homeowner or renter, you should schedule routine maintenance on your roof. No matter the quality of material or professionalism of the contractor, all roofs will face natural wear and tear eventually.

Weather Damage

When inadequate materials are used, bad weather can destroy your roof long before its natural wear and tear. Over time, rainfall, ice, snow, trees, and shrubbery can make your roof fall in and injure your property. You can avoid this issue by getting regular maintenance.

Common Roof Problems

Common roof problems can result in part of your roof collapsing. Should that occur, your walls and floors are exposed to outside elements. Rainfall can damage your tiles, carpet, or walls, leading to mold, as well as ruin your household items (e.g., family photos, laptop, and clothes in your closet). Heavy winds can cause debris to gather inside your home, spreading bacteria. Even your car can be damaged if your roof caves in over your garage.
